Last year online display marketing broke through the £1billion mark in the UK for the first time, thanks largely to the growth in popularity of video ads and social media marketing, not to mention the huge growth in the amount of people now using smart phones. According to the IAB ((Internet Advertising Bureau, advertising on the internet increased by 14.4 per cent on the whole and a massive £4.8bn was spent in 2011 by businesses looking to take advantage of the growing online marketing trend. There is no doubt about it, Britain is leading the way when it comes to online advertising and it is hardly surprising that the chancellor George Osborne has recognised this fact in his recent budget, as he sets out plans to make the UK a hub for the internet business.So with all that being said where should we be hedging our bets? Well if you’re an online business striving to make money the first port of call should be video ads. Video ads saw a massive £109 million rise in spend over 2011 and with things hardly getting better economically across the UK, you can guarantee this figure will rise as businesses scratch and claw to bring in important business. As we have pointed out in previous blogs, social media is massive and over the next few years will continue to grow in popularity for businesses. This is great news for the UK economy as not only does it supply small businesses with more business opportunities through carefully targeted ads and well managed campaigns but as more and more businesses are starting to invest in social media marketing with sites such as Facebook, Twitter and the quickly emerging Google plus, more specialist job opportunities will arise. If you want one last fact to persuade you that online display marketing is the key thing to invest in then bare in mind that the biggest sector to invest in it are finance brands followed by consumer goods and retail, arguably the two biggest sectors.
